Only membership applications received 90 days (prior to the month of June) before the next FIDIC General Assembly Meeting (GAM) will be reviewed for membership. After this deadline, applications will be reviewed for approval at the next GAM, in September of the following year.
Please read carefully the principles for the selection of the appropriate FIDIC membership category.
There can only be one national member organisation per country. If a Member Association exists in a country and a company or organisation qualifies to join this Member Association, then that company or organisation cannot become an Associate Member of FIDIC, it must join the existing Member Association. A list of current FIDIC Member Associations can be viewed here.
An individual, company or organisation can apply for membership directly with FIDIC (usually as an Affiliate, but possibly as an Associate member in a special case), if:
- there is no national Member Association in the country; or
- the individual, company or organisation is not eligible to join a national Member Association, but qualifies for membership in FIDIC (e.g. an international law firm that works extensively with the consulting engineering industry internationally); or - the individual, company or organisation is a full member or affiliate member of the national Member Association; or
- the individual, company or organisation has obtained approval from the national Member Association to seek membership in FIDIC even if it is not a member of the MA.

Member Association
Apply to join FIDIC as a Member Association
A Member Association is a national association which is the largest association of firms providing technology-based intellectual consulting services for the built and natural environment in a country.
Application procedure
Applications are assessed by senior FIDIC staff and then forwarded to the FIDIC membership committee for review and recommendation to the FIDIC board. The FIDIC board reviews their recommendation and submits compliant applications to the FIDIC General Assembly Meeting which takes place in conjunction with the annual FIDIC International Infrastructure Conference.
Member Association application documents
To apply to join FIDIC as a Member Association, an organisation should send the following documents to FIDIC:

- A copy of the organisation’s list of members.
- A letter from a government ministry or official of the country in which the organisation is based confirming that the organisation is the largest association of firms providing technology-based intellectual consulting services for the built and natural environment in the country.
Membership fees
FIDIC determines the calculation of subscriptions for Member Associations on the number of staff employed by the member firms or group of firms. In 2018, the unit rate is 2.65 Swiss Francs/staff member. The minimum membership fee is 1,900 Swiss Francs per year.
Associate Member
Apply to join FIDIC as an Associate Member
An Associate Member is any individual organisation, association, firm or group of firms which is based in a country not having a Member Association and which has a major part of its activity in the engineering consulting industry. This membership category is aimed at organisations that aim to become a FIDIC national Member Association. Subject to a final decision by the FIDIC board, it may also apply to associations covering sectors related to the consulting engineering industry but that are not under a formal ‘umbrella’ arrangement with the FIDIC national Member Association.
Associate Member application documents
To apply to join FIDIC as an Associate Member, an organisation should send the following documents to FIDIC:
A letter requesting Associate Membership of FIDIC outlining the expectations for collaboration with FIDIC - e.g. promoting and selling FIDIC documents; support for FIDIC training; promoting the consulting engineering industry; details of any planned activities (conferences seminars etc).
Letters of recommendation from the two referees that are mentioned on the application form.
Details of the firms in the group (address of head office; principals; ownership; date of registration; activities).
A letter to the FIDIC board which indicates that the group of firms shall do its utmost to promote the establishment in their country of an association of consulting engineers which would be eligible for membership of FIDIC in due course and that the firms shall observe the requirements of the statutes and by-laws of FIDIC.
A statement of intention to form a Member Association, or of an intention to form or join at some stage an ‘umbrella’ FIDIC national Member Association, giving the name/of the association/s concerned, or a statement explaining why a Member Association cannot be formed at his stage.

Affiliate Member
Apply to join FIDIC as an Affiliate Member
An Affiliate Member is any individual, association, organisation, firm or group of firms which is based in a country having or not having a Member Association and which supports the objectives of the federation. This membership category is aimed at commercial organisations which aim to maintain a close contact with FIDIC and support the federation’s activities at the local and international level.
Affiliate Member application documents
To apply to join FIDIC as an Affiliate Member, an organisation should send the following documents to FIDIC:
Individuals, associations, organisations, firms or groups of firms wishing to apply for Affiliate Membership and that are based in a country where FIDIC has a Member Association (MA) or Associate should submit a letter of approval from the FIDIC MA. This letter must be signed by the president or director of the association endorsing the applicant and sent to FIDIC. Applicants should provide any information required by the association in order to prepare the approval letter. Only applications accompanied by an approval letter will be reviewed.
A letter stating: - the motivation for the application; the main area of activity of the applicant, in particular, activities in fields related to consulting engineering and allied professions; and the relationship of the organisation to the consulting engineering industry and to the FIDIC Member Association in the country of origin.
Two letters of recommendation from any association, clients, partners or similar organisations working in the consulting engineering industry. These letters should normally be from the two references mentioned on the registration form.
Application procedure
Applications are reviewed by senior FIDIC staff and forwarded to the FIDIC Membership Committee for comments and recommendation. If not proposed by the Member Association in whose country the applicant is situated, shortlisted applications will be sent by FIDIC to the Member Association in the countries where applicants are based to obtain approval. Once the application is approved by the FIDIC Member Association, the FIDIC board will decide whether or not to approve the membership application. Successful applications are submitted to the FIDIC General Assembly Meeting for ratification.
Article 4.7 of the FIDIC statutes and by-laws establishes that Affiliate Membership from candidates based in countries where there is a FIDIC Member Association must demonstrate one of the following:-
- the candidate is a full member or affiliate member of that national Member Association;
- the candidate has obtained the approval of the national Member Association when not a member of that national association.
Applications for Affiliate Membership from candidates based in countries where there is no FIDIC Member Association and applications for international organisations, may be submitted to FIDIC for consideration.
All applications for Affiliate Membership shall be decided upon by the FIDIC board.
