Louis Prangey Award 2018

The Louis Prangey Award, the highest recognition for dedicated service to FIDIC, was named after the founding FIDIC President, Louis Prangey. The Louis Prangey Award was established to be presented to a person who has rendered significant service to the Federation and/or to the profession of independent consulting engineering, and who exemplifies the objectives of the Federation. The recipient is considered to be a role model for the consulting engineering industry.

Dr Nael Bunni

Dr Bunni is a Chartered Engineer, registered Chartered Arbitrator, Conciliator and Mediator. He is also a visiting professor in construction law and contract administration at Trinity College Dublin. He is past president of the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland (1987-88); past president of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (2000-01); and past chairman of its Irish branch (1986-89). Between 1994 and 2007, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the London Court of International Arbitration.  From 2004-2012 Dr Bunni was chairman of the Dispute Resolution Panel of the Institution of Engineers Ireland.

Over the last 25 years, Nael Bunni has been closely involved in FIDIC issues related to risk, liability, insurance, contracts, and dispute resolution.  In 1984 FIDIC established a task force to examine construction-related issues in insurance and law (CILTC).  As a first step, the CILTC published six policy statements in 1994, with Nael then as chairman. These six documents cover:

-          Limitation of liability

-          Alternative dispute resolution

-          The Expert witness

-          Contingent legal fees

-          Site safety

-          Collateral warranties

Around this time, Dr Bunni began his longstanding involvement in the FIDIC Contracts Committee, becoming involved in the development of the 1999 suite of FIDIC contracts. He was a full member from 2004-2009, and has been a Senior Advisor to the committee since then, especially on insurance and related matters.  He has also been closely involved in the development of the recently published 2017 suite of FIDIC contracts.  During this period, the committee also produced several other significant documents such as the White Book 2006 4th edition, and the Design Build & Operate Gold book. Dr Bunni is a vital asset for FIDIC and the continued development of its important Contract & Agreement model forms and guides.

Nael is a regular speaker at FIDIC conferences and business days, where his expertise in the field of insurance, liability in various legal jurisdictions is well recognised.  He is a frequent traveller, especially between Europe and the Middle East, having been involved in arbitrating numerous multiple large scale construction projects world-wide.
