FIDIC is participating in two official side events at the COP30 global climate conference taking place in Belém, Brazil from 10-21 November 2025.
COP30 is the 30th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP), an annual global meeting where world leaders, scientists, non-governmental organisations and civil society leaders gather to discuss actions to tackle climate change. It is considered one of the world’s key events on the subject and currently 198 countries participate in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, making it one of the largest multilateral bodies in the UN system.
FIDIC is co-organising a session on 14 November (4.45pm to 6.15pm Brazil time), Financing a Resilient Built Environment: Solutions for Infrastructure, Housing and Informal Settlements, with Build Change, Habitat for Humanity, World Green Building Council and the World Federation of Engineering Organisations. Artur Brito, chair of FIDIC’s Future Leaders Council, will be taking part in the session, which will explore how inclusive partnerships and innovative financing models can support resilient infrastructure, especially in vulnerable communities.
Other speakers in the session include Cristina Gamboa, CEO of the World Green Building Council, Rebecca Ochong, associate director for global affairs and advocacy at the Habitat for Humanity, Felipe Faria, CEO of the Brazil Green Building Council, Yves-Laurent Sapoval, urban envoy at the French Ministry of Ecological Transition, Robert Sangori, a building scientist at the Kenya Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development and Daniel Perez, a senior investment officer at the Inter-American Development Bank.
On 15 November (from 9.30am to 10.30am Brazil time), FIDIC will again be represented by FIDIC Future Leaders Advisory Council chair Artur Brito in a session, titled Co-Designing Infrastructure with Nature and Communities. This session, hosted by the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure, Bentley Systems, Mahila Housing Trust and the UN University, will highlight nature-positive infrastructure and the role of engineers in embedding community knowledge, standards and digital tools into resilient design.
FIDIC’s participation at COP30 will be focused on making an impact in the following areas:
- Capacity building for engineers and infrastructure professionals.
- Promoting Qualification-Based Selection (QBS) as a driver of quality and resilience.
- Advocating for robust contractual frameworks that support sustainability and risk management.
- Advancing carbon management through practical tools like the FIDIC Carbon Management Framework.
- Highlighting the essential role of engineers in shaping a sustainable, resilient future.
A virtual audience registration link is available for the session, Co-Designing Infrastructure with Nature and Communities, and this will appear on the COP30 resilience hub page at https://cop-resilience-hub.org/cop30/
