A FIDIC webinar is set to offer attendees an update on the latest industry digital developments, including the use of BIM and how to incorporate emerging technologies in terms of contract.

The online event, BIM and digital technologies - optimise traditional ways of working or make a paradigm shift? takes place on Tuesday 4 April 2023 and has been organised by FIDIC’s digital transformation committee. Like all events in FIDIC’s 2023 series, the webinar is sponsored by infrastructure engineering software company Bentley Systems, FIDIC’s 2023 webinar strategic partner.

A large proportion of the engineering, construction and infrastructure industry is developing their digital design and construction strategies and are at different levels of maturity, moving at different paces. Some companies are optimising the traditional processes of design and construction and others are developing new business models and new ways of working, constructing and manufacturing. It's also the case that the industry in different countries is also at varying stages in its use of digital technology and innovation.

Both approaches present opportunities and challenges and this webinar will look at how to incorporate and navigate Building Information Modelling (BIM) and emerging technologies contractually, what is on the horizon and what lessons are being learned from this broad range of approaches. Although technology investment has historically been lagging in the sector, there has been a significant acceleration in investment over the past two years. Technology is seen as one of the main levers to increase resilience in the sector, with 75% of leaders in a recent KPMG construction survey citing technology as the main lever to reduce risks and better manage overruns.

Speakers at the event include Martina Hess, FIDIC board member and director of CES Consulting Engineers Salzgitter, Stacy Sinclair, head of technology and innovation at Fenwick Elliott LLP, Claire Rutkowski, chief information officer at Bentley Systems, Nicholas Felix, contracts engineer hydro projects at Nippon Koei, Jeremy Glover, partner at Fenwick Elliott LLP and bridge designer and founder of LearnGrasshopper.com Krzysztof Wojslaw.

Nippon Koei’s Nicholas Felix will examine some of the lessons learnt on implementing BIM on the Asaha No.3 project, Indonesian Power Project, Fenwick Elliott’s Jeremy Glover will look at incorporating BIM contractually and Krzysztof Wojslaw will highlight the new technologies used on the world's biggest bridge build, based on a BIM model and talk about how new technologies will shape the future of design, construction and project delivery.

The webinar will be useful for all those interested in digital transformation in the engineering and construction sector, no matter what stage you may be in your digital journey and is free to attend, though pre-registration is essential.
