Engineering a post-Covid future: the challenges for global infrastructure
- an international online conference brought to you by FIDIC
The Covid-19 crisis has challenged the world like never before, with no business sector unaffected. As we emerge into a post-Covid future, it is clear that infrastructure investment will play a crucial role in the recovery of global and national economies. However, our world has changed and future demands will be different when planning sustainable building and public infrastructure. Will capacity demand change and what will be the impact on funding and planning? How will stakeholders in the industry cooperate in the ‘new normal’? Will we see new forms of alliances between public and private sectors and how will projects and contracts be structured in a post-Covid environment?
This online conference hosted by FIDIC provides an interactive stage where leaders and experts in the industry can come together to identify and address these key questions, provide a forum for discussion and debate and offer perspectives for a way forward to enable the industry to continue to thrive in the months and years ahead.
Day 1 – Friday 11 September 2020 – 12 noon CET to 4.15pm CET
Infrastructure after Covid – what will it look like?
The prime aim of global governments is to adjust to keeping people safe and society functioning efficiently in a future post-Covid world. However, it is clear that there will be significant implications for capacity and sustainable use of infrastructure going forward. Will we focus more on smart utilisation of infrastructure rather than expansion and what will sustainable infrastructure look like in the future? How can it be made more resilient? What are the key economic, financial and legal drivers impacting the sector? How will our cities and environment be designed in the new normal?

On day 2 of the conference, the implications of post-Covid in a world that has changed will be shared by representatives of different stakeholders in our industry. How will we need to change the way we work and adapt processes to meet the challenge of the new normal? Remote working and the use of digital technologies have become even more widespread as a result of the pandemic. How will governments, financial institutions and private sector interact in the future? Will professional conditions change our current way of financing and contracting projects? Can we create a society that is more resilient and agile in order to deal with future crises and recover from the aftershocks of Covid-19?
